Cotton Yarn
Cotton is a light-weight fiber that is good for summer clothing and accessories as it is quite breathable and comfortable to wear next to the skin. It is easily dyed, so it comes in a dazzling variety of colors. It is strong, durable and machine-washable and reatively inexpensive to buy. Organic cotton is becoming a very popular yarn to use. Organic simply means that the cotton is grown in a chemical and pesticide free environment, which makes it desirable for those who are concerned about using more natural products. Another type of cotton is mercerized cotton. Mercerized cotton yarn is made by adding caustic soda to the fiber which makes it stronger and gives it a lustrous sheen. The process to make mercerized cotton is rather complex, but it results in a yarn that stays shiny through washings and gives a nicer, fancier look to finished items.
